Esther French served as Clerk of the Ohio women's YM for 15 years. The only person to serve that body more years was Jane Plummer, and only one man served as Clerk of the men's Ohio YM longer than French (Benjamin Hoyle). French is tied for third in terms of length of service as Ohio YM Clerk with Sina Hall.

Her parents were Jonas and Elizabeth Cattell. The family moved to Redstone MM in 1788. She married Thomas French, and they moved to Salem QM where Esther served as an Elder for many years. Thomas and Esther served with the Shawnee Indians in Missouri from 1842 to 1843.
