Joseph D. Hall was a grandson of Joseph Dew, one of the earliest Friends to settle in Ohio. His parents were Abner and Lavina Hall. He travelled to Ohio with his grandfather and his mother in 1800. In 1817, Hall moved to Westland MM and married Mary Hilles the following year. The Halls became Hicksites in 1828.
